The pen is enough

Culture

We can all be part of creating a world we want to live in together.

Let’s shape it with mutual respect and inclusiveness.

Speak your mind openly. About what you believe is a good way to live, what you like to do, don’t like to do, preferences, likes and dislikes.

But don’t speak against those who prefer to live differently, or have a culture or beliefs different from yours. That’s their life – let them live their way in peace. If anything, spend more time with them, maybe you’ll learn something interesting – not least about yourself.

I am certain we all prefer to live our lives in peace.

Everybody should be free to speak their mind. But freedom of speech does not mean you have the right to speak poorly of others, or disparage them for their ideas, ideals or way of life.

We are 7.5+ billion people on this lovely planet, each and every one of us an individual with different tastes and preferences. And even we share culture and beliefs in large overlapping groups. There is not a single one of us who experiences life in exactly the same way as any other human.

This diversity of life and thought is what have brought us this far – and it must be preserved.

The pen is a mighty tool, it should be all we need – not bullets, not bullying.

We must also recognise, that sometimes language and cultural differences lead to misunderstandings. And we should choose to be patient and educate each other on those issues. Invite people into our lives and culture, instead of pushing them away.

That is not the same as speaking up against those who deliberately do wrong to others, those who use power to oppress or subdue.

We need to know the difference.

Speak your mind – for what you believe. Live your life as you believe a good life should be lived. And meet others in the beautiful space between us – where we can learn from each other, and diversity can thrive every day.
